Chocolate is a pretty common topic in my home! My husband is currently getting his Master’s Degree in Social Science with an emphasis on African Studies. He is researching African trade with a focus in cocoa production and how cocoa is still being acquired through oppression and unfairly paid labor. My family only buys Fair Trade chocolate or chocolate that is ethically acquired. Not every chocolate bar that is “fairly traded” is certified Fair Trade. There are other certifications that mean the exact same thing…that the product was fairly paid for. One of these certifications is the Rainforest Alliance.  They work with cocoa farms that have met comprehensive standards for sustainable agriculture that protects wildlands, waterways, wildlife habitat and the rights and well-being of workers, their families and their communities.

An ancient and secret blend of cocoa beans brought to western shores by the traders of the south seas in the times of the East India Company where adventurous and exotic tastes seduced the sophisticated palettes of the modern world. Such is the origins of the Copper Monkey, where such chocolate recipes were traded for trinkets of copper. One such trinket was the COPPER MONKEY!

In June, my husband and I met up with Copper Monkey, an Australian made chocolate company, at the NPA Marketplace in Las Vegas. Copper Monkey has Rainforest Alliance Certification on their chocolate bars. They currently have 5 different bars: Milk Chocolate, Hazelnut Milk Chocolate, Almond Milk Chocolate, Fruit & Nut Milk Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate. My husband and I tasted a couple samples :) at the show and loved the flavor.

Once I got home I was generously sent a couple of each of their bars…some for my personal use and some to share with friends and family! They tasted even better than I remembered! They are also huge bars…7 oz each! Copper Monkey is currently working on 3.5 oz bars for those that have no self control!!!! :) These bars are made in Australia with no artificial coloring or artificial flavoring.

Copper Monkey sources the cocoa for its chocolate bars from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ cocoa farms. Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms meet comprehensive standards for sustainable agriculture that protect wildlands, waterways, wildlife habitat and the rights and well-being of workers, their families and communities.

When my friends came over, I put out an assortment of chocolate and my friends were all impressed! One friend even said “This is really good chocolate!” and I couldn’t agree more! I think my favorites are the Hazelnut and the Almond. My husband is a dark chocolate lover so he will be excited when their new 75% cocoa bar comes out! The dark chocolate bar they currently have is a balancing blend of sweetness and pure cocoa taste. It’s not dark enough for my husband, so it is perfect for someone that thinks milk chocolate is too sweet and the dark is too bitter! The bars are easy to break into bite size pieces so you can easily limit yourself. Copper Monkey strives to create healthy chocolate, but that doesn’t mean that eating a chocolate bar is healthy. All chocolate should be eaten in moderation, just make sure that the chocolate is made with quality ingredients. I am so glad to have found Copper Monkey and I hope that my local health food store will start carrying their bars!

Copper monkey is currently available in the following stores:

Harvest Markets – Fort Bragg, California

Bird Pick Tea and Herb company – LA, California

Green Grocers – Wichita, Kansas

SUNAC Natural foods – Brooklyn, NY

They are working on other contracts like Bristol Farms, so your local store may be carrying these bars soon. If you want your local retail store to carry Copper Monkey, let them know! Just inform your local store about Copper Monkey and then they an contact them on their website. Each 7 oz bar should be about $5 depending on the store.
