I like supporting companies that make their products in the US because they pay fair wages and are responsibly made. All around the word, handmade products are being made ethically. Alternatives Global Market build partnerships with artisans, cooperatives, and fair trade organizations all over the world. The artisan always receives a fair wage for their handmade good. The shop carries a variety of fashionable and home products.
The Batik Jhola Bag is beautifully made in India. The bag is made with Batik (pronounced ba-teek), a traditional Indian art. The artist applies wax to the cloth and then dip it into the cool dyes. The cloth below the wax is not dyed and when removed with hot water, light motifs are revealed on the dyed cloth. You can learn more about Batik HERE.
This cotton bag opens with a zipper from strap to strap. This handmade bag measures 13″ x 15″ and has two zip pockets and two open pockets inside. The inside is double lined with a unique print. The artisans that create these bags belong to a non-profit cooperative in Chennai, India. The project is certified by the Fair Trade Federation.
This bag is so unique and works great as an over-night bag or for a day trip. I love the design and the colors as well the zipper. The cotton bag is lightweight but durable. I can’t wait for people to ask me where I got it!
I was also sent the Beeswax Candle Making Kit. My kids were able to roll the sheets of beeswax (with a little help); they had so much fun. The beeswax sheets were easy to roll in the summer heat. The Rainbow pack came with six sheets of pure beeswax honeycomb in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
The USA made beeswax sheets measure 8″x8″ and come from a small family farm in the Pacific Northwest that has been cultivating beeswax for over 25 years. Beeswax candles are naturally scented with the sweetness of honey and they burn cleanly. This kit can be used by kids as young as 3.
My kids and I had a great time rolling the candles. My kids were fascinated with the texture and the fact that they were actually making candles! This was a great summer craft.
