I have heard great things about soap nuts and I was given the opportunity to try some recently from Greener Living. Soap Nuts have no synthetic chemicals, no fragrance chemicals, no foaming agents or other toxins. They contain no added chemicals, fragrances, dyes or fillers…just a nut from a tree! Since they are so pure, they work especially well for people with skin allergies, eczema, or sensitivities to commercial detergents. They are safe and effective for cloth diapers and safe for all colors and types of fabrics. Soap nuts are hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. They are 100% natural and biodegradable. This is the perfect laundry detergent for me since they are so environmentally friendly!

In India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries, a tree called sapindus mukorrosi grows small fruits surrounded by a firm outer shell. This tree is unique because it produces its own natural saponins, a soap-like product, that coats the shell of the fruit. When the fruits ripen and fall from the tree, local families harvest it, then remove the fruit from the seed. The soap nut shell is then dried out in the sun, using absolutely no chemical processing or manufacturing processes. The soap nut shell absorbs water and releases saponins which circulate as a natural surfactant in the wash water, reducing the surface tension of the water and freeing dirt, grime and oils from the clothing. They act just as commercial laundry detergents, but without the chemicals. When the clothes are rinsed, the soapnut saponins are washed downstream where they remain harmless to the environment.

In order to wash you just place 3-5 soap nuts in the reusable wash bag and drop it into your washing machine. You can use the soap nuts in any type of wash and in any water temperature. After 4-6 washes, dispose of the soap nuts and add in new ones (you can compost them)! To get the most out of your soap nuts, place the bag under warm to hot water to get them working, then just toss them in with your clothes…your washer will do the rest.

I was sent the huge box pictured above and it has enough soap nuts in it to clean 300 loads…this will last me a LONG time! I tried the soap nuts with my towels in a hot wash, with my kids clothes in a warm wash and in my husband’s clothes in a cold wash. They worked great in every wash! I also took the soap nuts on a trip to handwash clothes, and they were great at that too!

I love these soap nuts because they are as natural as soap can be, they really do work, and I can use them in every load! If you are looking for a natural way to clean your clothes, I recommend you try out Greener Living Soap Nuts! I’ve heard they work great on cloth diapers, so if you cloth diaper, soap nuts will save you a lot of money on detergent and you don’t have to have a special detergent just for your cloth diapers!

You can buy Soap Nuts on the Greener Living website. This 2.2 lb box sells for $34.95 and comes with six small wash bags. If you get 300 loads out of the box, that means each load only costs less than $0.12 a wash!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

I have been reading about soap nuts and just wanted to ask you for an update, do you still use the soap nuts? Do you find that they clean your clothes as effectively (or more so) then the commercial detergents? Thank you in advance :)
